MONROE, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team came up short in earning a sweep against ULM as the Warhawks took the series finale, 5-0, Sunday at Lou St. Amant Field.
Nicholls (11-7) received another strong outing on the mound by freshman
Jacob Mayers but his lone run allowed in the fifth was enough for his first loss of the season. He struck out seven in 5.0 innings and only gave up a bunt single in his final frame.
On offense, the Colonels had a tough time against ULM starter Chipper Menard, who fanned 11 batters in six shutout innings. Menard walked five but the Colonels were unable to capitalize.
Nicholls finished with five hits, led by
Garrett Felix with two singles.
Wes Toups pushed his hitting streak to five games with a single while
Edgar Alvarez and
Erick Ordonez each added a base hit.
ULM also had five hits in the victory. They added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch before plating three in the eighth to make the final.
