MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Nicholls State University baseball team fell 2-1 in Friday's opening game of their doubleheader against Nebraska before the Cornhuskers cruised to a 17-1 victory in Game 2 at Tointon Stadium.
The series has been altered several times due to the weather, including moving from Lincoln, Nebraska to Kansas, and the teams will finish the series with a Sunday finale set for 2 p.m.
For the doubleheader, Nicholls (11-10) rallied in the seventh of Game 1 with three singles but could only push across one run in the seven-inning contest.
Tyler Theriot went the distance on the mound, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and struck out three. He allowed RBI singles in the first and sixth innings for the lone Nebraska runs in the contest.
Nicholls tagged Emmett Olson for seven hits, getting two from
MaCrae Kendrick. But Olson fanned seven batters in the victory.
Trailing 2-0 in the seventh with one out, Nicholls put together three consecutive singles as
Garrett Felix,
Austin Cain and Kendrick all reached on hits.
Gerardo Villarreal accounted for the lone run on a sacrifice fly before Olson notched his seventh strikeout to end the game.
In Game 2, Nebraska broke open the contest with a combined 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to the 17-1 victory.
Devin Desandro took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. The Cornhuskers tagged the Colonel pitching staff for 17 hits which included three home runs and a double.
On offense, Felix, Villarreal and
Jaden Collura each singled. The only run for the Colonels scored on a wild pitch.

Nicholls and Nebraska will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
