Baseball downs Mississippi Valley, 10-5

THIBODAUX, La. - Michael Quevedo tossed five hitless innings while the offense produced at least a run in the first four innings as the Nicholls State University baseball team picked up a 10-5 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.

Nicholls (13-10) had nine hits in the win which included a 3-for-4 day by Xane Washington. The senior right fielder hit a 2-run homer in the seventh and also doubled, finishing with two RBIs. MaCrae Kendrick finished with a multi-hit effort as well and also doubled.

Quevedo earned the victory, striking out four in his five innings of work. He had a perfect outing going into the fifth before issuing a two-out walk.

Nicholls took advantage of free passes and errors to score a run in each of the first three frames. Austin Cain had an RBI on a fielder's choice in the first and Kade Turnage followed with a sacrifice fly in the second. For the third inning, Edgar Alvarez smoked a single up the middle to plate Washington.

Hunter LeBlanc then made it 5-0 with a 2-run homer in the fourth. He took an 0-1 pitch and drove it inside the foul pole in right field.

Mississippi Valley (7-14) finally produced some offense with a pair of hits off of Arturo Rodriguez in the sixth. Davione Hall plated a run on a double and then came home on a double steal to make it 5-2.

Nicholls then got the two runs back in the seventh. Washington cleared the wall in left for his first long ball of the season before a blooper to left dropped down for an RBI double for Kendrick.

MVSU scored two in the eighth and the Colonels followed with three more runs. Washington delivered an RBI single and the two other runs came on groundouts. The Delta Devils then plated one more in the ninth to make the final.

Isaiah Valenzuela threw seven innings for MVSU, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Dreylin Holmes subbed in and went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
