Colonel Baseball falters in series split against Penn

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team received three-hit outings by Parker Coddou and Edgar Alvarez, but the Colonels were unable to secure a two-game series sweep against Penn as the Quakers picked up a 5-4 win Wednesday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.

With the loss, Nicholls (9-6) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

After falling behind on another early home run by Penn, Coddou and Alvarez delivered RBI hits in the third to even the game at 2-2. Wes Toups tripled to deep center with one out and then scored on a Coddou double. With two down, Alvarez ripped a single up the middle to pull the Colonels even.

But the lead was short lived. Jackson Appel put Penn back on top in the fourth on a single and then a wild pitch doubled the Quaker advantage. Penn added another run in the fifth on a Jackson Baker double.

In the sixth, Nicholls pulled within a run but stranded a pair of runners. Garrett Felix drove in the first run on a groundout and reached safely via an error. After a hit-by-pitch, Jordan Thompson beat out a double play for an RBI. The Quakers got out of the jam with a swinging strikeout.

Over the final three innings, the only runner to reach against the Quaker pitching staff was Alvarez who had a two-out single in the seventh. Eli Trop struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

The Colonels used a pitcher-by-committee for the second straight game. Ryan Burt allowed the 2-run homer in his lone inning of work and Arturo Rodriguez was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. The staff totaled 13 strikeouts with Chat Hayes sitting down four batters in 2.1 innings.
