THIBODAUX, La. - Following a competitive doubles session, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team picked up two set victories in singles but could not come away with a point as the Colonels lost their Southland Conference opener against New Orleans, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
With the loss, Nicholls (5-6, 0-1 SLC) has dropped it last nine regular season conference matches dating back to 2019. It also marked a fourth straight loss to New Orleans, which improved to 6-4 overall and 1-0.
UNO claimed the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 3. After taking No. 3 with a 6-1 victory, the final two matches turned out to be a battle.

Quentin Lamothe teamed up at No. 2 and finished in a 5-5 tie as

Ilian Borlee were edged 6-4 at No. 1 to clinch the point for the Privateers.
New Orleans went on to secure the team victory with straight-set wins on courts 2, 5 and 1. Lamothe took a set in his match at No. 4 against Luke Joujan but fell 4-6, 6-4, 8-10 and Borlee nearly prevented the shutout with a 6-3, 4-6, 9-11 decision at No. 3.
Griffin Babineaux lost at No. 6 in straight sets but the scores were close at 7-5, 6-4.Â
