Islanders prevent sweep with 6-1 win over Colonels

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team was doubled up in hits against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Islanders avoided a sweep with a 9-4 victory on Saturday at Chapman Field.

With the loss, Nicholls dropped to 20-14 overall and 7-5 in league play. The Colonels have won three of their four league series but fell short in securing their first sweep.

The Islanders (15-15, 3-6 SLC) scored four runs in the second inning and never trailed in the game. Nicholls cut into the deficit with three in the fourth; however, AMCC got all three runs back in the bottom half. They added two more runs and Primrose Aholelei finished off the complete game.

Audrey McNeill took the loss for the Colonels, lasting 1.2 innings with two earned runs on three hits and two walks. She gave up an RBI double to Juliana Garcia in the second before exiting the game. Molly Yoo subbed in and was not able to limit the damage as AMCC added three more runs.

Nicholls rallied in the fourth after three consecutive batters reached base with one out. Melise Gossen and Brynne Songy both singled before Tal Evans drew a walk to fill the bags. MaKynli Miller drove in the first run on a groundout and then a two-out error allowed two more runs to cross the plate.

But the Islanders immediately answered with their own three-run inning to push the lead to 7-3. Jensen Gremillion and Averi Paden pitched for the Colonels, allowing a combined three hits in the inning.

AMCC scored one in the fifth and sixth innings before the Colonels made one last push in the seventh. An Abby Andersen double set up a sacrifice fly by Claire Sisco, and Erin Krause kept the inning going with her second hit of the ballgame. But Aholelei notched her third strikeout to close it out.

Krause and Gossen had two hits apiece as Nicholls finished with six in the game. Four players posted multi-hit efforts for the Islanders.
