LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team surrendered an early two-run lead before rallying with a pair of runs in the seventh to tie the game, but McNeese finished off the series sweep with a walkoff 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Diamond.
With the loss, Nicholls slipped to 22-20 overall and 9-9 in conference. McNeese improved to 32-12 and 14-1 after winning against the Colonels for the seventh straight time.Â
Nicholls totaled seven hits and broke its scoring drought in the series early on with a solo home run by
Molly VandenBout. But after the Colonels added a run in the third inning for a 2-0 lead, McNeese used its own homer, a 3-run shot, to cap a four-run frame in the bottom half.
The Colonels rallied in the seventh, scoring two runs against Whitney Tate, who tossed a shutout in Game 2.
Melise Gossen started the rally with a single before pinch runner
Brianna McFaddin scored from first on a
Brynne Songy RBI double. With two down and a runner on third,
Abby Andersen sprayed a single to left to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff base hit made way for the walkoff single by Mariana Torres to complete the sweep. Torres accounted for three of the Cowgirls' 10 hits.Â
Molly Yoo was tagged with the loss, tossing 3.1 innings of relief. She gave up four hits and struck out one. Yoo had three shutout innings to allow the Colonels to make their late rally.
Averi Paden made the start, giving up four earned runs on six hits in 3.0 innings.
Seven different Colonels had a hit in the loss, with VandenBout's and Songy's going for extra bases.Â
