Colonels cruise in Tuesday win over Mississippi Valley St.

THIBODAUX, La. - Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Nicholls State University baseball team showed no signs of any rust as the Colonels defeated Mississippi Valley State, 12-3, Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Mississippi Valley (10-27) scored in the first inning before Nicholls scored the next five runs. Then leading 7-3 in the seventh, Nicholls (19-13) put together a five-run frame to make the final.

The Colonels totaled 16 hits in the victory as the No. 1 through 6 batters in the lineup each had multi-hit efforts. Not only did they produce in the hit column, but each had at least one RBI as they combined for nine. Gerardo Villarreal led the group with a 3-for-6 night at the plate.

Wes Toups also had a big night in his return, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Toups had been sidelined for a month with an injury but also picked up where he left off, hitting a 2-run homer in the seventh.

Toups' home run was the second of the game for the Colonels. With Nicholls down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Parker Coddou led the inning off with a solo shot to right field for his fifth bomb of the season. He and Toups now lead the offense with five homers.

Toups gave Nicholls a 2-1 edge with an RBI single in the second, then the Colonels scored three in the fourth. Xane Washington plated two on a double and Edgar Alvarez followed with a run-scoring single.

MVSU made it 5-2 in the fifth via an RBI double by Dreylin Holmes who led the Delta Devils with a 3-for-4 outing. But the Colonels answered with a Garrett Felix RBI single in the bottom half and Austin Cain drove in another in the sixth on a base hit.

After MVSU scored in the seventh on an error, the Colonels put the game away with their five-run seventh. Toups started the scoring with his homer and Washington made it 10-3 on his second hit of the night. Villarreal doubled for his third hit and plated the final two runs.

Chat Hayes made the start, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings. All five Colonels who pitched tallied at least one strikeout as the staff totaled nine.
