CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team wrapped up the spring season with a 4-0 loss to top-seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday morning at the Islanders' home courts.
The Islanders (23-2) cruised in doubles play by allowing just a single point in the two completed matches. Then in singles, Nicholls was swept in the first set before the Islanders went on to win three matches in straight sets.
In doubles,
Constanza Cruz and
Laura Lopez played on the top line and fell 6-1.
Noemie Piquet and
Sophia Sara Safarova were shutout at No. 3 while
Carla Bouygues and
Dareen Hassan were trailing 4-2 when the doubles point was clinched.
Cruz was the first to fall in singles, dropping her match at No. 4 against Valeria Cherfus, 6-1 and 6-1. Bouygues then sufferend a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Victoire Delattre. The clinching match came at No. 2 as Naomi Moi McKenzie topped Safarova, 6-4 and 6-0.
For the unfinished matches,
Simona Maksimovic (No. 1) and Lopez (No. 6) both trailed 2-6, 1-3 while Hassan was at 3-6, 3-3 at No. 3.
Nicholls ended the season with an 10-15 overall record. The postseason victory was the first for the program since 2015.
