THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team outlasted Lamar in extra innings with a 5-4 victory before falling via mercy-rule in Game 2, 10-0, Thursday at Swanner Field.
The teams will wrap up the series on Friday with a noon first pitch.
GAME 1 - Nicholls 5, Lamar 4 (8 innings)
After trailing 4-1, Nicholls rallied with three late runs before
Claire Sisco hit a walkoff single in the eighth for a 5-4 victory.
Catcher
Adie Brake started the comeback with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2. In the sixth,
Melise Gossen drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Brake delivered in the clutch with a two-out RBI single that tied the game.
The Colonels had a golden opportunity to end the contest in the seventh by loading the bases with no outs, but Cameron Niedenthal forced three grounders to escape the inning.
In the extra frame,
MaKynli Miller singled and stole second to set up the game-winning run. SIsco flared a blooper to shallow left center and it dropped between three Cardinals for the walkoff hit.
Audrey McNeill picked up the win, striking out a season-high eight batters in eight innings pitched. She allowed two earned runs on four hits. Lamar took advantage of an error in the fifth and used a big 2-run single by Kaylee Ancelot to take a 4-1 lead.
The Colonels scored the first run of the game on an
Erin Krause single through the left side. Krause, Brake and Sisco each had two hits as Nicholls finished with 12 in the game.
GAME 2 - Lamar 10, Nicholls 0 (5 innings)
The Cardinals scored multi-runs in each of the first four innings while Aaliyah Ruiz held the Colonels to a pair of hits in a 10-0 victory for Lamar in five innings.
Alexa Poche' and
MaKynli Miller accounted for the Colonels' two singles. Lamar totaled 10 hits and four were for extra bases. Ancelot had a 2-run double in the opening frame and drove the game's final runs in the fourth on a 2-run homer.
Molly Yoo took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings. A total of four Colonels pitched with Kayln DeHart tossing a shutout frame in the fifth.
