Colonel Baseball evens series against Islanders with 7-2 victory

THIBODAUX, La. - Freshman Jacob Mayers and Nico Saltaformaggio combined for 13 strikeouts and just three hits allowed while Edgar Alvarez and Austin Cain teamed up for seven hits on offense as the Nicholls State University baseball team evened its series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 7-2 victory Saturday night at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

With the win, Nicholls (28-20, 13-7 SLC) maintained its slim lead in the Southland standings and will be looking for its fifth series victory of the season in the finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Senior Day Ceremony will begin at 12:20 p.m.

Mayers continued his spectacular rookie season with another eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Although he totaled five walks, the right-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Islanders got their lone two hits against him to end the shutout. Saltaformaggio took over on the mound and was just as dominant, striking out five in 3.1 innings. He also gave up a hit and a run in his final inning but went on to earn his third save of the season.

On offense, it was the Cain show early on as he drove in the game's first three runs. Alvarez and Gerardo Villarreal had two-out singles in the first and both scored on Cain's triple to the left center wall. Then in the third, Alvarez and Villarreal both walked with two outs before Cain ripped a single through the left side for a 3-0 lead. Nicholls added one more run in the fifth via a Garrett Felix fielder's choice.

All five of Mayers' walks came in the first three innings but he then settled in and retired seven straight Islanders. Leo Markotic broke up the no-hitter with a double in the sixth and it led to a run-scoring single.

Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Nicholls took advantage of three Islander error for a 7-1 lead. Wes Toups led off the frame with a single and Alvarez added an RBI base hit.

The score remained 7-1 until the Islanders scratched together a run in the ninth to make the final.

Cain and Alvarez accounted for over half of the Colonels' 11 hits, with Cain's triple being the only hit for extra bases.

For Mayers, he dropped his league-leading ERA to 1.93 and upped his strikeout total to an SLC best 88.
