NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team plated two runs in the eighth and ninth innings but came up short in a 7-6 loss to New Orleans on Thursday night at Maestri Field.
With the loss, Nicholls (29-21, 14-8 SLC) saw its lead in the standings shrink to 1.0 games after UIW's win Thursday night. The Colonels are 2.0 games ahead of New Orleans (32-21, 12-10 SLC) and Northwestern State with just two games remaining.
The Colonels had a promising start thanks to a bases-loaded 2-run double by
Kaden Amundson in the second, but the Privateers scored the game's next seven runs before fending off a late Colonel rally. An RBI triple off the wall by
Edgar Alvarez highlighted the two-run eighth and
Wes Toups doubled in the ninth to start a final push.
Basiel Williams added a run on a groundout before
Parker Coddou singled up the middle with two down to make it 7-6. But Jacob Mead forced
Xane Washington to pop out on the first pitch to end the game.
UNO outhit the Colonels, 11-8, and did most of their damage in the fourth inning. After back-to-back RBI singles, Tyler Bischke hit a 3-run shot for a 6-2 Privateer lead. UNO added another run in the seventh which turned out to be the game-winning run.
With the exception of scoring two in the second inning, Nicholls had a tough going early as four of the first six innings ended on a double play. The first two were via groundouts and the ones that ended the fifth and sixth innings were on lineouts. But the offense found its groove in the latter innings as four of their eight hits came in the final three frames.
Coddou and Toups each had two hits for the Colonels while
Gerardo Villarreal added an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Devin Desandro took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 3.0 innings.
Gavin Galy posted a solid outing out of the bullpen, surrendering one earned run on three hits in 4.0 innings.
Brandon Mitchell tossed 7.1 innings for the win, striking out four batters.
