THIBODAUX, La. – Junior defender Peyton Bastine scored her first goal of the season in the Nicholls State University 5-1 loss to Lamar University at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Friday night.
 
Bastine found the back of the net via a free kick from nearly 50 yards out in the 90th minute of action to claim the first Red & Gray goal in conference play.
 
The physical match between the two teams saw 41 combined fouls, including two yellow cards.
 
The scoring began in the 17th minute when Cariel Ellis found the back of the net. The Cardinals held a 1-0 advantage at the intermission and outshot the Colonels 13-1.
 
In the second stanza, the Cardinals took control of the action and added four goals, mostly because the effort from Hollie Massey.
 
Massey converted a penalty kick after Nicholls committed a handball in the box (50'). Five minutes later Massey broke free and sent a cross into the box that unfortunately deflected off the Colonels for an own goal.
 
Later in the 55th minute, Massey took a free kick that hit the cross bar and Maddie Janolo was able to kick the rebound into the back of the net. Kolbi Coleman added a goal (59') to put the Cardinals up 5-0.
