Colonel Men's Basketball wraps up home stand Monday against New Orleans

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will conclude its three-game home stand with a Monday night matchup against the University of New Orleans. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Nicholls began the mini home swing with a win over Southeastern before suffering a two-point loss in overtime to Lamar on Saturday. It marked the first loss at home for the Colonels and third in the last season-plus. It was also Nicholls' third OT game this season and the second in league play.

The Colonels and New Orleans enter the matchup with identical 2-1 records in conference. The Privateers fell in their opener against Southeastern before reeling off wins against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UNO was led by Jordan Johnson who poured in 36 and 40 points in the victories.

For the Colonels, Robert Brown III was the star on offense against Lamar, scoring a career-high 25 points. Brown came off the bench for the first time and had a strong showing from the field as he hit 10 of 16 which including three three-pointers. Brown also came through in overtime with the team's final four points.

Another positive in the defeat was the return of Jalen White's three-point prowess. White, who was the NCAA's active career leader in three-point percentage, made 5 of 8 from long distance and finished with 19 points. Entering the game, White had connected on just 2 of 19 over the previous four contests. White currently ranks third in the Southland in three-point percentage at 39 percent.

Johnson's big week for UNO upped his scoring average to a league best 22.9 points per game. The Privateer point guard did not play in Nicholls' 84-59 win against UNO last season but scored 26 two weeks later in their 88-82 victory at home.

Nicholls has won nine of the last 12 meetings against UNO. The Colonels have also won the last four in Thibodaux with the last loss coming in 2019.
