THIBODAUX, La. – Following its three-game home stand, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team heads to the Lone Star State for its next three contests, starting Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff at American Bank Center is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Nicholls (8-9, 3-1 SLC) already has a league win in Texas after the overtime victory at HCU to begin Southland play. The Colonels returned home to defeat Southeastern and New Orleans but suffered an overtime loss to Lamar.
In nine road games this season Nicholls is averaging 73.0 points per game, paced by
Jamal West Jr. who is nearly at a double-double at 18.4 points and 9.4 rebounds.
Diante Smith is the second-leading scorer on the road at 15.0 while
Robert Brown III (10.9) and
Jalen White (10.6) are also averaging double figures.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi brings a 3-1 mark in the SLC into the matchup and will be the fifth opponent for the Colonels with an identical league record. The Islanders' lone loss was at New Orleans while Nicholls rallied back from 17 on Monday night to knock off the Privateers.
The Islanders have excelled this season in forcing turnovers, ranking 13th in the NCAA with 16.4 per game. As a result, they also are 13th in the nation in points produced off a fast break with 16.4.
Dian Wright-Forde (11.3 ppg) and Garry Clark (11.2) lead AMCC on offense as they rank 19th and 20th in the Southland in scoring. Clark has been one of the top rebounders as well, collecting 8.1 per game and ranks second with 3.4 offensive boards.
The Islanders lead the all-time series, 13-9, helped by their current three-game winning streak. Nicholls won three in a row in 2021-22 before falling in the Southland Tournament to AMCC in an upset. The Islanders swept Nicholls last season en route to a regular season title.
Nicholls is 2-7 all-time in Corpus Christi. The Colonels won in 2022 to snap a four-game drought that dated back to 2011.
