THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team wraps up its Texas three-game road swing with a Saturday matchup against Texas A&M-Commerce. Tipoff inside The Field House is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Sporting a 4-2 record in the Southland, Nicholls (9-10) will aim for its third road win in league play before returning home for six of its next eight games. The Colonels won two of three games in their January home stand.
Nicholls has had a knack for dramatics so far in its SLC slate with three games going into overtime, including a 78-74 win in the last outing at UIW. The Red and Gray also erased a 17-point deficit in the second half to defeat New Orleans, which matched the program's comeback last season in the win at A&M-Commerce.
The Colonels and Lions split the season series last year with each team winning on the road. In the rally for Nicholls,
Caleb Huffman drained a three-pointer to tie the game in the final minute before
Latrell Jones hit one from long range for a 66-63 win. The Lions avenged the loss with a last-second 72-71 victory in Thibodaux.
Against UIW last Saturday,
Diante Smith and
Byron Ireland each scored 20 points while
Robert Brown III added 15. Brown ranks fifth in scoring in conference play at 16.3 points per game and is followed in the rankings by Smith (15.3) and
Jamal West Jr. (15.2). West had just seven points at UIW which was the first time he was held to single digits in 10 games.
A&M-Commerce is coming off a road loss at Lamar. The lone league win for the Lions came against the SLC's other Lions, Southeastern, in a 68-52 victory in Hammond.
TAMUC has two players who rank in the Top 10 in scoring in conference play -- Kalen Williams (14.3 ppg) and Jerome Brewer Jr. (14.1). Brewer put together one of the league's top scoring performances this season with 32 points against first-place McNeese.
A&M-Commerce leads the all-time series, 4-1. Before last season, the teams had not played since 1966.
