THIBODAUX, La. – After three consecutive road games, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will return home to host Northwestern State on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m. and HCU on Saturday, Feb. 3. The action from inside Stopher Gym will be streamed via ESPN+.
Last week, Nicholls (8-11, 2-5 SLC) were beaten 71-67 by Texas A&M-Commerce after going cold in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter. Northwestern State (8-11, 4-4 SLC) split their league games last week as they took down McNeese before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Last week, HCU (5-14, 0-8 SLC) lost to Southeastern at home and at UIW.
The Red & Gray have four players that average double figures during the opening month of conference play. Sophomore forward
Lexi Alexander leads the way with 12.4 points and 5 rebounds.
Senior guards
Mikayla Etienne and
Kyla Hamilton averages 11.1 and 10.6 points respectively. Hamilton also ranks sixth in the SLC in steals per game (1.8). In the game against the Lions, Hamilton crossed the 1000 career point threshold. She will be recognized for her efforts prior to Thursday's game.
Freshman guard
Britiya Curtis averages 10 points while being one of the SLC's most efficient scorers as she shoots .429 percent from the field and .417 percent from beyond the arc. In last week's game she was 4-7 from deep enroute to her third consecutive double figure scoring outing.
Northwestern State is led by Jiselle Woodson who averages 11.5 points and 3.2 assists. Sharna Ayres averages 10.8 points and 5 rebounds, while Karmelah Dean and Jenny Ntambwe adds 9.2 and 9.1 points per game. The Lady Demons have won four straight matchups against the Colonels.
HCU is spearheaded N'Denasija Collins who averages 13.9 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting .469 from the field. Kennedy Wilson adds 10.7 points and leads the team in assists (2.3). The Colonels are currently on a two-game win streak against the Huskies lead the all-time series 11-7. This includes the 73-55 Red & Gray victory in Houston earlier this season.
