• The Nicholls State University football team heads to Texas for its final road games, starting with a trip to Houston to take on HCU. The Colonels will be searching for their second win on the road while the Huskies will be aiming for a Homecoming victory. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

• The meeting will be the 10th all-time between the Colonels and Huskies with Nicholls on a current nine-game winning streak. Last season in Thibodaux, Collin Guggenheim tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns in the Colonels' 38-7 victory. Jaylon Spears led the offense with 113 yards rushing on just eight carries and senior David Robinson Jr. also tallied his first career 100-yard game in receiving yards, highlighted by a one-handed touchdown grab for the contest's opening points. For the defense, HCU was limited to 220 total yards and had three turnovers -- two coming on interceptions by Tyler Morton.

• After shutting down Stephen F. Austin for most of the first half, Nicholls allowed three touchdown passes in the final four minutes of the second quarter in a 28-12 home loss last Saturday. Leading 6-0, failed on a fourth-down try with five minutes until the intermission. SFA followed with their first touchdown of the game and then blocked a punt, leading to another TD pass. The Lumberjack then tallied an interception and turned that into Sam Vidlak's third touchdown toss for a 21-6 lead.  SFA threw another touchdown pass in the third quarter before Nicholls tried to make it interesting with a late touchdown and onside recovery. But the Colonels had a turnover on downs before SFA recorded its third interception of the day to seal the victory, snapping a four-game skid in the series. Nicholls outgained SFA, which came into the matchup with the league's top offense,  413-301 in total yards. The Colonels also had 23 first downs compared to 11 for the Lumberjacks and held the ball for 42 minutes but the multiple miscues were too much to overcome.

• HCU is coming off a loss as well and heads into the weekend looking to put an end to its three-game skid. The Huskies last fell 40-25 on the road at first-place and top-10 ranked UIW. HCU is searching for its second league win after defeating McNeese, 43-22, a month ago. The Huskies are also hoping to duplicate its Homecoming magic from 10 years ago when HCU claimed its first-ever SLC victory with a 31-21 win over Nicholls.

A WIN OVER HCU WOULD...

... extend the Colonels' winning streak in the series to 10 games. Nicholls has never won 10 straight in a series against any opponent.
... give the Colonels a 10-1 advantage in the all-time series and a 5-1 mark in Houston.
... improve Coach Rebowe's record in the SLC to 49-27.
... improve Rebowe's record vs. Texas schools to 32-18.
... be the third SLC win on the season. Nicholls has not won fewer than three in the nine seasons under Coach Rebowe.

BY THE NUMBERS

2 -- Tight end Treylin Whaley has two receptions this season and both have gone for touchdowns. Whaley hauled in an 11-yard catch at Southern for his first career TD and then added No. 2 on a 10-yard reception last game against SFA.

9 -- True freshman Miequle Brock continues to see an increased role in the offense, coming off a career-high nine receptions for 89 yards vs. SFA. Brock added 61 yards on 11 carries and had a 47-yard kickoff return.

24 -- The Colonel defense has wreaked havoc all season and added three more turnovers, upping its total to 24 on the season. Nicholls had two fumble recoveries and Kendarius Smith notched his second career interception. Nicholls has the second most turnovers gained in the FCS, trailing only Mercer's 26.
