THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team picked up a pair of victories over Dillard and Mississippi Valley State to wrap up non-conference action.
The Colonels finish non-conference play 7-2 with their two losses coming by a combined seven points. The seven victories in non-conference action are the most by a Colonel squad since the 2018-19 season (6).
GAME ONE: Nicholls (63) vs. Dillard (47)
In the third home victory of the season three double figure scorers led the way.
Deonna Brister spearheaded the unit as she hit five field goals including four from long range to finish with a game high 16 points.
Malaya Jones also hit five field goals including a pair of triples to score 13 points while
Daelyn Craig hit all five of her shot attempts and two foul shots to finish with 12.
Tanita Swift dished eight assists and scored eight points while
Emani Burks scored eight and hauled in seven boards.
Elli Garnett had a game high 10 rebounds.
GAME TWO: Nicholls (67) @ MVSU (56)
On Sunday, the Colonels offense got off to a slow start as they shot 34% from the field and committed 11 turnovers in the first half. Three of the eight makes came from beyond the arc to help the Colonels keep pace. Despite holding MVSU scoreless the final 2:59 of the half the Colonels trailed 26-23 at the intermission.
In the second half the Colonels kept their defensive momentum rolling while their offense found their footing as the unit shot 16-22 (72%) from the field in the second half.
Nicholls pieced together a 26-6 run that stretched across 11 minutes of action allowed the Red & Gray to build a 43-36 advantage heading into the fourth. The Colonels shot 6-7 from long range in the second half to keep distance from MVSU.
Elli Garnett led the offensive charge as she hit five field goals and had 13 points and hauled in a game best 12 boards to secure her first double-double as a Colonel. Brister scored all game high 16 points in the second half while Jones provided a spark off the bench with 16 points of her own.
