Colonels go cold in second half against Cardinals

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team suffered a 70-44 loss to Lamar University inside the Neches Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Nicholls got off to a slow start and trailed 14-0 to begin the game. The Red & Gray responded by piecing together a 20-8 run that started at the 6:09 mark in the first quarter until the five-minute mark in the second quarter to make the score 22-20, Cardinals.
 
After that, the Colonels' offense went ice cold and allowed a 28-6 run that began at the 5:38 mark of the second quarter until sophomore forward Lexi Alexander hit a shot at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter.
 
The Colonels hit five shots from the field and 11 foul shots in the entire second half. The Cardinals shot 8-17 (47.1%) from the field in the third quarter to balloon their lead.
 
For Alexander, she scored 16 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. This was her 17th double figure scoring effort including three of the last four contests. Senior guard Mikayla Etienne chipped in with eight points.
 
Lamar finished the game with four double digit scorers. Akasha Davis finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds, followed by Jacei Denley (16), Sabria Dean (11), and R'Mani Taylor (10)

The Red & Gray (11-12, 5-6 SLC) will make the short trip to New Orleans to battle UNO inside Lakefront Arena on Thursday, Feb. 15.
