THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team opened the season with a 16-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Friday night.

The Colonels scored 16 runs on 13 hits while the pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout.

Senior first baseman Edgar Alvarez went 2-3 at the plate and highlighted a seven run second inning with a three-run homer. Additionally, he scored four times and walked twice. Drake Anderson, Basiel Williams, and Narvin Booker Jr. also had two hits apiece.

Sophomore pitcher Jacob Mayers struck out seven batters in four hitless innings. Senior pitcher Devin Desandro earned the win with six strikeouts and three clean innings. Freshman pitcher Dallis Moran struck out four in the final two innings.

In the Colonels' big inning, Williams gave Nicholls a 2-0 lead with an RBI single. After senior shortstop Parker Coddou hit a two-run single, Alvarez cleared the right field wall to put the Red & Gray up 7-0.

Leading 8-0 in the fourth, Aaron Biediger doubled down the third base line to allow the ninth and tenth run to cross the plate. The Colonels added three more runs in each the sixth and seventh innings. Nicholls took advantage of the Pioneers' seventh error of the night to score its final run in the eighth inning.
