Softball splits Friday action in Houston Classic

HOUSTON, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team split its two games on Friday in the Houston Classic, shutting out UTSA, 7-0, before falling on a walk-off homer against UMass, 2-1.

The Colonels (5-4) will continue play in the classic with a pair of rematches, taking on Houston at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday before facing UMass at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Game 1 - Nicholls 7, UTSA 0

The Colonels received a complete game shutout from sophomore Molly Yoo while the offense produced 11 hits including a pair of home runs in the 7-0 victory.

Yoo struck out five while scattering four singles for her first win of the season. Reagan Heflin, Erin Krause, Brynne Songy, and Claire Sisco led the offense with two hits each.

Heflin got things started in the first inning with a two-run homer, which was the Colonels' first long ball of the season. Sisco gave Nicholls a 3-0 lead in the second with an RBI groundout.

In the fourth, Yoo allowed two hits but got some help from her defense when center fielder Gabby Higbee gunned down the leadoff batter trying for a double. In the bottom half, Songy hit a solo home run before Higbee came through with an RBI single. Nicholls then added two more runs in the frame on a Heflin groundout and Krause RBI base hit.

Yoo closed out her complete game with three hitless frames.

Game 2 - UMass 2, Nicholls 1

Nicholls held a 1-0 lead going into the final inning against UMass, but a wild pitch evened the game before the Minutewomen won on a walkoff solo home run.

The Colonels scored in the fourth on an RBI groundout off the bat of Alexa Poche'. Heflin led off the inning with a base hit, stole second, then moved to third on a sacrifice to set up the run.

Audrey McNeill kept UMass off the board through six innings and allowed only three hits. But in the seventh, UMass pieced together a rally for the win.

McNeill surrendered five hits and struck out two in the complete game effort.

For the offense, Molly VandenBout and Sisco each had a hit for the Colonels.
