TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Nicholls State University softball team won its fourth and fifth straight games on Friday with a doubleheader sweep against FIU to open play in the Dugout Club Classic, hosted by Florida State.
The Colonels will play two against No. 11 Florida State on Saturday with both games streaming on ACCNX.
Game 1 - Nicholls 11, FIU 1
Alexa Poche' homered in the first inning to set the tone as the Colonels rolled to an 11-1 victory over Florida International. The Colonels racked up a season-high 14 hits in the win, getting home runs by Poche' and
Gabby Higbee.
Abby Andersend paced the lineup with three hits and three RBIs as she was one of five Colonels with multi-hit efforts.
As good as the offense was,
Audrey McNeill was as impressive in the circle. The senior tossed a complete game, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings of work. She struck out two and walked one.
Following Poche's homer in the first, Nicholls plated two runs in the second before Andersen and
Samantha Gwiazda had an RBI single in the next two innings. Leading 6-0 in the sixth, Higbee homered to right field but the Panthers finally scored against McNeill in the bottom half. Ashton Lansdell had the lone RBI with a double.
In the seventh, the Colonels scored the final four runs with the help of RBI doubles by Andersen and Gwiazda. McNeill retired the Panthers in order to finish off her complete game.
Game 2 - Nicholls 3, FIU 0
Molly Yoo turned in a dominant performance as the Colonels swept FIU with a 3-0 victory.
Yoo gave up only three hits and struck out three en route to her second shutout in her last three outings. The offense provided all of the run support in the fourth inning when
Molly VandenBout led off the frame with a double.
Andersen gave Nicholls a 1-0 lead on a base hit, then
Claire Sisco singled and came around to score on a wild pitch.
Rylie Rutherford following with a run-scoring single.
The three runs proved to be more than enough for Yoo. She allowed a base runner in each of the final four innings but never surrendered her shutout.Â
Nicholls totaled 12 hits with VandenBout and Sisco recording half with three each.Â
