Colonels set for Texas finale Saturday night against Lamar

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will conclude its Southland Conference Texas road slate as the Colonels head to Beaumont looking to avenge their lone home loss of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 inside the Neches Center.

Nicholls (12-10, 7-2 SLC) is riding a four-game winning streak while Lamar (12-10, 6-3 SLC) has been dominant at home this season with a 9-1 record. The Cardinals are perfect in Beaumont in league play with their lone setback against Southern Miss.

The trip to Lamar will be the fifth and final trek to Texas for Nicholls. The Colonels posted league wins at HCU, Texas A&M-Commerce, and UIW -- but needed overtime in all three victories. When the Colonels hosted Lamar on Jan. 13, that game also needed overtime as the Cardinals escaped Stopher Gymnasium with a 78-76 victory. Including the triple overtime win in November at South Alabama, the Red and Gray have played five OT games which is the second most in the NCAA.

In the earlier meeting with Lamar, Robert Brown III exploded for a career-high 25 points. The Colonels have been without Brown the last two games as he's been dealing with an injury, but Michael Gray Jr. stepped and provided a pair of double-digit scoring efforts. Gray finished a point shy of his season high in the win over Northwestern State, totaling 17 points against the Demons. He and Jamal West Jr. each finished with a team-high in points while Diante Smith scored 14 of his 16 in the opening half.

Smith and West continue to lead the offense in league play, averaging 16.9 and 15.6 points, respectively. For Lamar, Chris Pryor, who hit the game-winning layup in the victory in Thibodaux, averages a team high 14.2 points in conference.

UP NEXT
Nicholls returns home on Monday, Feb. 12 to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Colonels fell to the Islanders, 69-59, before their current four-game winning streak.
