Nicholls Softball falls at home against No. 6 LSU

THIBODAUX, La. - Hosting LSU for the first time since 2014, the Nicholls State University softball team hung around for most of the game against the nationally-ranked Tigers but fell 10-2 in front of a sold-out crowd at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Nicholls (17-15) trailed 4-0 through five innings but did not record its first hit of the game off Tiger starter Raelin Chafin until the visitors extended their lead to 7-0 in the sixth. Samantha Gwiazda broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single, setting up a two-run single by Alexa Poche' for the Colonels' lone runs of the night.

LSU got both back in the seventh and added one more to make the final.

Averi Paden pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits. Although she walked six, Paden's two strikeouts helped the Colonels get out of jams. She struck out Taylor Pleasants in the fourth to strand a runner and then in the fifth, left the bags full with a strikeout of Ali Newman.

Molly Yoo took the loss with three earned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. The sophomore ran into her own trouble in the opening inning by allowing a single and a pair of free passes. But she notched her lone strikeout for the second out before getting a grounder to short to leave the bases loaded. In the second, however, LSU pieced together a three-run inning with Ciara Briggs hitting a two-run shot for a 3-0 advantage.

LSU added another run in the third off of Paden before she and Chafin tossed up zeros in the fourth and fifth innings. But in the sixth, McKaela Walker snuck a pitch down the left field line and inside the foul pole for a three-run homer and a 7-0 advantage.

Gwiazda ended the no-hitter on the first pitch of the sixth. The Colonels then added a runner via a hit-by-pitch and pinch-runnner Carmella Muccilli stole second to put runners in scoring position. Poche' came through by ripping a base hit up the middle to end the shutout.

LSU's three-run seventh was highlighted by a Raeleen Gutierrez RBI triple.

Chafin picked up the win with five strikeouts in the complete game effort. Maddox McKee led LSU with three hits while adding two RBIs and two runs scored.
