HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University track and field teams returned to action at the 2024 Strawberry Relays hosted by Southeastern on Friday, April 12.
The competition in Hammond included Dillard, Hinds CC, Southern, Coahoma CC, Tulane, New Orleans, William Carey, Xavier, Loyola, Mobile, and Mississippi University for Women.
In the distance events,
Sophia Harrison won the women's 3K steeplechase with a time of 12:34.07,
Lucas Futey placed second in the men's 3K steeplechase (10:28.81) while
Chase Walker finished fourth (10:44.67). Maria Nikolau won the women's 1500m run after posting a time of 4.43.63, while
Kassidy Besson (4:44.93) and
Issy Rivault (5:05.76) placed third and seventh in the same race.
Ty Fraizer won his heat but had the ninth best time in the men's 1500m run.
The Colonels also had a strong showing in the speed events.
Danya Satterfield placed eighth in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.78,
Nia Maye finished ninth in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.07. In the men's 110m hurdles,
Gavin White placed seventh after clocking a time of 16.08. Harrison (2:35.26) and
Elaina Hansen (2:36.16) placed eighth and 10th in the women's 800m, while in the women's 400m hurdles
Andrea Tirado finished fourth with a time of 1:10.82.
Amari Godette placed sixth in the men's 200m dash after clocking a time of 21.64.
In the field the Colonels racked up 14 top-10 finishes.
Jarred Whitrack (13.40m) finished fourth in the men's shot put while
Amiya Matthews (10.69m) and
Maggie Portier (10.25m) placed eighth and ninth in the women's shot put. Portier also placed 10th in the discus throw with a 27.95m mark. In the women's javelin throw, Matthews finished fifth with a 34.29m toss while
Jaycee Fanguy placed seventh with a 27.62m heave.
Gavin Windham launched the javelin 47.11m to finish third on the men's side. In the men's long jump,
Christopher Tucker soared 6.44m to finish fifth and
Andrei Fuentes leaped 6.24m to finished 10th.
Sydney Brown leaped 10.94m to finished fourth in the women's triple jump, while Tucker took second on the men's side with a 13.35m effort. Tirado and
Cherie Neal cleared the 1.50m height in the women's high jump to finish third and fifth, respectively.
