SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 7 Nicholls State University men's tennis team was unable to continue its hot streak as the Colonels were defeated 4-0 against No. 2 NJIT in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament Thursday night at the McFarlin Tennis Center.
With the loss, Nicholls finished the season with a 12-7 overall record while seeing its six-match win streak come to an end. It was also the first setback in three meetings against NJIT (17-5).
The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point.
Antonio Sasso and
Ammar Fekery fell 6-3 at No. 2 before
Harry Collins and
Kotaro Matsumura lost 6-4 at No. 3 to finish off the match.
In singles, NJIT won five of six sets to open play with
Quentin Lamothe coming away with a 7-6 victory at No. 3 for the Colonels. Collins nearly picked up a win in his first set but came up short in the tiebreaker.
Os Callo von Platen was the first Highlander to win in singles, knocking off Sasso at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1. Pablo Perez Ramos took down
Omar Morsy at No. 1, 6-1, 6-4, before Pavel Petrov's 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Danial Banov at No. 4 ended the match.
