SAN ANTONIO, Texas - For the second year in a row, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team secured a postseason victory as the 10th-seeded Colonels breezed by No. 7 Southeastern with a 4-1 triumph on Thursday at the McFarlin Tennis Center.
Nicholls (7-13) started with a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point and nearly clinched a sweep after
Lea Grinberg and
Carla Bouygues claimed straight-set wins at Courts 3 and 2, respectively. But Southeastern (9-13) won on Court 5 to avoid the shutout before
Liu QianYu sent the Colonels to the next round with a victory at No. 1.
The Colonels will take on No. 2 McNeese on Friday with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m. The Cowgirls won the previous matchup in Thibodaux on March 9, picking up a 6-1 victory.
Nicholls got off to a slow start against SLU with the Lady Lions winning the first doubles match, 6-0. Bouygues and
Constanza Cruz evened it up with a 6-3 victory against Bente Bierma / Leana Gomez on the top line. With the point up for grabs, Grinberg and
Aada Inna ousted Taisia Bolsova / Kate Oborina with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.
In singles, the Colonels won five of the first six completed sets which included Grinberg and Bouygues surrendering just a lone game each. Grinberg finished off Kate Oborina with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 and Bouygues was close behind with her 6-1, 6-2 victory against Leana Gomez at 2.Â
SLU's Claudia Di Leonardo put the Lady Lions on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over
Noemie Piquet at No. 5. But it would be the lone point for SLU in the match. After QianYu defeated Alba Perez in the first set 6-4 at No. 1, she closed out the match with a 6-3 win to end the Colonels' 12-match skid.Â
Cruz saw her match go unfinished at 6-3, 4-3 while
Dareen Hassan was a game away from clinching her match at No. 6, 6-2, 0-6, 5-3.
