AUSTIN, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team allowed seven runs in the first inning against No. 1 Texas and despite a valiant effort the rest of the way, the Colonels were never able to climb back as the Longhorns won 10-3 on Thursday night at McCombs Field.
The loss was the second in the last three years against Texas (39-6), which won its 10th consecutive game. Nicholls (25-22) will look to bounce back quickly with a three-game series at UIW, starting Friday at 3 p.m.
Texas tripled up the Colonels in hits, 15-5, with eight coming in the first inning against
Averi Paden. But the sophomore lefty settled in with two scoreless innings in the second and third before leaving the game in the fourth. Paden allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings.
Molly Yoo pitched the rest of the game, giving up two earned runs on four hits.
Nicholls got its first hit off of Estelle Czech in the second inning with a one-out single by
Abby Andersen. The senior played a role in the Colonels' two-run frame in the fourth as well.
Reagan Heflin started the inning with a double, setting up an RBI single to center by
Alexa Poche'. Andersen followed with a double to put runners in scoring position and Nicholls added a run on an error for a 7-2 deficit.
Texas scored in the bottom half on a Viviana Martinez double that chased Paden out of the game. Yoo hit a batter but a run was negated when
Claire Sisco fired home in time from second base on a double steal attempt.
Heflin delivered the Colonels' final run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth but once again, Texas answered in its half and added one more run in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Erin Krause had the other hit for the Colonels, tallying a single with two down in the fifth. Texas played outstanding defense in the outfield, robbing the Colonels of multiple hits. Sisco went 0-for-4 in the game to see her stretch of 27 consecutive games on-base come to an end.
