THIBODAUX, La. - Following a loss in doubles action, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team got off to a promising start in singles by winning three opening sets but came up short in picking up its first league win with a 5-2 setback against New Orleans Wednesday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

With the loss, Nicholls fell to 10-16 overall and 0-5 in league play. The Colonels will host their final two Southland matches on Friday (vs Southeastern) and Monday (vs Northwestern State).

Carla Bouygues was one of the two Colonels to win in singles, defeating Ana Kouchnareva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The other victory came when Sophia Sara Safarova edged out Tristanne Dechoux at No. 3 with 7-5 and 6-4 victories. 

UNO clinched the match with wins at No. 4, 6 and 1. Constanza Cruz won her first set at No. 5 but went on to fall against Ksenia Reznitskaya, 6-2, 2-6, 5-7. 

New Orleans jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by sweeping doubles. The Privateers took courts 1 and 3, 6-3, and won at No. 2, 6-1.
