Nicholls Women's Tennis falls in SLC finale to NSU, Tulane match canceled

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team hosted Northwestern State on Monday in its Southland Conference finale and after a lengthy weather delay, the visitors came away with a 6-1 victory over the Colonels at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

Nicholls (6-12, 0-7 SLC) picked up a point by default at No. 6 singles with Northwestern State (10-7, 3-3 SLC) having only five players in the lineup. The Lady Demons also surrendered Court 3 in doubles but secured the point with 6-3 and 6-4 victories on the top lines.

Lightning forced the teams off the court and then the rain set in for the next hour. The courts were finally dry and play resumed after a 3 hour and 30 minute delay.

The Colonels were also short a player with Sophia Sara Safarova out, resulting in a shift up the lineup at 3 through 5. Sofi Garcia gave NSU a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Aada Inna at No. 4 before Liu QianYu fell in straight sets against Tjasa Klevisar at No. 1. The clinching point came at No. 3 with Lea Grinberg dropping her match to Maria Farina, 6-2, 6-3.

The final two matches saw Constanza Cruz and Carla Bouygues put up fights in two of their sets, but both would come up short. Cruz was handed a 6-2, 7-5 setback against Honoka Umeda at No. 5. Bouygues took Sara Erenda into a tiebreaker in their opening set at No. 2, 7-6 (7-3) before falling in the second, 6-4.
