SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team was beaten 7-6 by UIW on Sullivan Field on Friday afternoon.
After falling behind 7-2, the Colonels scored three runs in the eighth frame. The stanza was highlighted by a
Basiel Williams two RBI single.
Edgar Alvarez hit an RBI single up the middle that allowed
Drake Anderson who hit a leadoff double to score from second.
In the ninth,
Parker Coddou hit a run scoring single with two down and a full count, but the Colonels were unable to score another run to tie or take the lead.
Williams blasted a solo home run in the second inning to put the Colonels up 1-0. After that the Cardinals scored one run in the third before exploding for five runs in the fourth. Gerrardo Villarreal plated
Kaden Amundson with a two out double to left field in the sixth.
The Colonels used six pitchers and tallied 10 walks. Starting pitcher
Jacob Mayers (3-1) struck out five batters but suffered his first loss of the season. Chase Ricther also went three full innings while allowing two runs and four hits.
Gavin Galy and Aturo Rodriguez combined for scoreless innings.
UIW starter Josh Salinas improved to 5-1 on the season after allowing five earned runs and nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work. Adam Byrd picked up his third save of the season.
