Colonels rout MVSU 66-0 in home opener

THIBODAUX, La. - Playing on Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium for the first time this season, the Nicholls State University football team racked up 455 yards rushing and tied a school record with six interceptions by the defense as the Colonels rolled to a 66-0 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.

The 66 points scored was the most in a shutout in school history against a Division I opponent, surpassing the 58-0 win over Northwestern State in 2007. The margin of victory was also the fourth largest in program history.

True freshman Miequle Brock sparked the offense with three touchdowns in his debut, rushing for 132 yards on just eight carries while adding 77 yards receiving on two catches. Corey Warren Jr. scored his first career touchdowns as well, rushing 12 times for 124 yards for his first 100-yard effort. Collin Guggenheim ran for 78 yards and a score in the first half while quarterback Ean Rodrigue had a 34-yard rushing TD on his first career carry.

Defensively, Nicholls (1-3) allowed 159 total yards and did not let MVSU (0-4) convert a third down on 12 attempts. The Delta Devils finished with -7 yards rushing on 18 attempts which included four Colonel sacks. The six interceptions, which were by six different players, matched the school's most for a single game. The last time Nicholls had six picks was in 1992 against UCF.

The fireworks started on just the fourth play of the game as Brock sliced through the defense for a 33-yard TD on his first carry as a Colonel. After a three-and-out, Rodrigue ran right up the middle for a 14-0 early lead.

The third touchdown drive matched the Colonels' longest in terms of plays, going 63 yards on 11 plays. Pat McQuaide ended the drive when he scrambled and found Quincy Brown for a 6-yard touchdown. McQuaide finished 15 of 20 for 182 yards passing and two scores.

Early in the second, Guggenheim found the end zone from five yards out for a 28-0 Colonel lead. But the teams then traded turnovers on the next three possessions. Jake Dalmado registered his first career pick but Nicholls gave the ball back on a fumble. However, Ethan Lee hauled in an interception at midfield on the second MVSU play.

Brock's receiving TD came on a pass in the flat and he took it 80 yards for a 35-0 lead. Keontae Williams added his first career pick and it turned into a 28-yard rushing touchdown by Warren. To close out the half, Hayden Shaheen intercepted a pass and Gabe Showalter converted on a 37-yard field goal to make it 45-0.

In the second half, the Colonels sat the starters but still found the end zone three times. Brock capped his day with a 68-yard touchdown run and quarterback Jakob Foss added a touchdown in the third with a 10-yard strike to Karaaz Johnson.

Warren made the final score with his second touchdown run early in the fourth. A pair of former MVSU players, Destin Refuge and Jamison Lindsey, tallied the final two interceptions for the Colonels to help preserve the shutout.
