THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team will cross state lines into Texas for a pair of Southland Conference matchups at HCU and Lamar.
The action from Houston will begin on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 pm, while the match in Beaumont on Sunday, Sept. 29 will begin at 4 pm and will be streamed via ESPN+.
The Red & Gray have doubled their win total from last year under first year head coach and former Colonel
Kristy Helmers. The unit picked up wins over Jackson State, MVSU, and opened the season with a 0-0 tie with Louisiana Tech.
The Red & Gray opened league action with a 2-0 loss at Northwestern State. HCU enters the weekend 2-5-3 after picking up a 3-1 win at Prairie View A&M and a 0-0 draw at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamar is 2-5-2 after a 3-0 loss at SFA to begin SLC action.
The Colonels offense is spearheaded by senior forward
Koryn Barrett who scored her fourth goal of the season in the victory at Jackson State. Additionally, she is one of four players in the SLC with four or more. For two of her goals, Barrett was setup by freshman midfielder
Mylea Riggle who scored a goal of her own in the win over MVSU.
A pair of Colonel defenders,
Peyton Bastine and
Berkley Payne also scored in the win over MVSU. Both had flair as Bastine blasted a free kick from over 30 yards out past the goalkeeper before Payne soared over multiple players to head the ball in off a corner by Alexa Deathrage.
Senior goalkeeper
Megan Cook has registered 25 saves and has only allowed 10 goals (.714) while facing 90 shots in over 600 minutes of action. Additionally, she has three clean sheets as her and the defense held LA Tech, MVSU and Jackson State scoreless.
