Colonels Coast Past Cowgirls for Second Consecutive Victory

Lake Charles, La.  – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team played stout defense and shot efficiently from the field in its 60-47 win over McNeese State University inside the Legacy Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels offense hit 23 field goals (41.1%) while allowing the Cowgirls to hit 16 field goals (31.7%) and commit 20 turnovers.
 
The Red & Gray had a balanced offensive attack that featured eight different scorers was spearheaded by Britiya Curtis who hit five field goals to finish with a game-high 13 points.
 
Deonna Brister hit four shots including one from long range to add 12 points while hauling in game-best eight boards.  Tanita Swift chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams got out to hot starts offensively. Colonels hit eight field goals (47.1%) while Cowgirls hit seven (53.8%).
  •  Swift and Burks had four points apiece, but the Colonels trailed 10-8 at the Q1 media timeout (4:21).
  • Teams continue to trade baskets until Jesslynn Jalomo hits a heavily contested triple at the buzzer to give the Colonels a 17-14 advantage at the end of Q1.
  • Nicholls owned Q2 with efficient offense (6-12) and stout defense that allowed Cowgirls to shoot 3-12 and commit five turnovers.
  • Red & Gray pieced together a 19-2 run over a 5:36 minute stretch. Curtis paced the offense with multiple buckets to finish the first half with a game-high 11 points.
  • Nicholls shot 14-29 from the field including three triples and five free throws to lead 36-21 at the intermission.
  • Both teams come out of the break slow and produce a low scoring Q3. Colonels (26.7%) and Cowgirls (16.7%) combine to hit six field goals in the stanza.
  • Despite the Colonels going on a scoring drought that lasted nearly five minutes the Red & Gray held a double figure lead for most of Q3. Colonels led 47-31 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Colonels scoring slowed down and the Cowgirls built momentum and got as close as 11multiple times.
  • The Colonels scored a few baskets and hit free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.

The Red & Gray will return home and host Lamar (Jan. 16) and new SLC foe Stephen F. Austin (Jan.18) in their first game in Stopher Gym in nearly a month.
