THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half before HCU knotted it up, and the defenses pitched a shutout in the second half as the Colonels and Huskies finished the match in a 1-1 draw Thursday night at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
After securing their first league win under second-year head coach
Kristy Helmers in late September, Nicholls (4-7-2, 1-3-1 SLC) claimed its first Southland point at home since 2023 with the draw. The Colonels also ended the Huskies' 13-match winning streak in the all-time series, dating back to 2014.
For the Colonels,
Kaylie Harris put the home team on top with a goal in the 24th minute.
Sammi Doyle fired a shot from close range and it was deflected by the HCU goalkeeper, and Harris was there for the rebound and scored her third goal of the season.
But in the 32nd minute, HCU (6-6-2, 1-2-2 SLC) had multiple corner kicks in a row and Tiana Thompson put one in front of the goalkeeper, and Katya Alexis scored on a header to even the count at 1-1.
In the second half, the Colonels pushed the tempo early with three shots but did not have one in the final 25 minutes. However, HCU accounted for four shots while keeping the Colonels' silent on offense, but none of the attempts were on target.
HCU held a 15-6 advantage in shots but only a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies totaled seven corners while Nicholls had none.
Aislinn Wright finished with four saves for the Colonels while Harris led the offense with two shots.
