THIBODAUX, La. –The Nicholls State University baseball team exploded for five runs in the eighth inning of its 5-3 opening day victory over Northern Illinois on Ray E. Didier Field on Friday night.
The Colonels trailed 3-0 with two outs until
AJ Cappell hit a bases loaded single to left field to drive in
Narvin Booker Jr. Another run scored on the play via an error to make the score 3-2.
In the ensuing at bat,
Tyler Johnson walked to reload the bases. Next, pinch hitter,
Logan Mallard was hit by a pitch to bring in the tying run. The Colonels took the lead on a
Karson Irvin two run single to center.
Harper Jordan pitched the ninth and picked up a pair of strikeouts to close the door on the Huskies' comeback attempt. Relief pitcher
Nick Fields went two full innings allowing three hits to pick up his first win of the season. Starting pitcher
Michael Lindsey struck out eight batters, allowed three hits and one run.
The victory is the first for head coach
Brent Haring as the Colonels have won on opening day for the third consecutive season.
