Colonel Softball Drops First Two of I-10 Classic

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team opened up play in the I-10 Border Classic with a 12-1 loss in five innings to Lamar Thursday night before falling 6-1 to Tulsa on Friday afternoon.

With the setbacks, Nicholls slips to 2-4 on the season. The Colonels will continue play in the classic with two games in Lake Charles on Saturday against Missouri State (1 p.m.) and McNeese (3:30 p.m.).

Game 1 - Lamar 12, Nicholls 1 (5 inn.)

The Colonels struck first with a run in the opening inning before Lamar used two big frames for a 12-1 run-rule victory.

Nicholls had four hits in the loss and two came in the first inning. Riley Rutherford and Molly VandenBout both singled to bring in a run but Lamar would shut out the Colonels for the rest of the game.

The Cardinals tied the game in the second before putting together a seven-run third to take a commanding lead. LU used six hits and a two-out error to go up 8-1. Then in the fourth, Cala Wilson homered to highlight a four-run inning.

For the Colonels, Claire Sisco had a double and Ally Mooneyham added a single.

Averi Paden took the loss, lasting three innings with five earned runs on eight hits.

Game 2 - Tulsa 6, Nicholls 1

The Golden Hurricane scored four runs in the first inning and it was more than enough in their 6-1 victory.

Molly Yoo only allowed one hit in the first, but it was a triple after she issued three free passes -- two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Sierra Oulettee took over in the circle and pitched the rest of the game, giving up two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings.

The Colonels' lone run came in the fifth on a pinch-hit Lilianna Robledo sacrifice fly. Laylin Sturm and Kayleigh Lugowski both singled after Carmella Muccilli led off with a walk. But a caught stealing helped Tulsa get out of the inning.

After Tusla added to its lead in the bottom half, Nicholls started the sixth with base hits by Rutherford and Erin Krause but could not cut into the deficit.

Nicholls outhit Tulsa in the loss, 6-4. Rutherford's 2-for-3 day was her second multi-hit game of the season.Â
