HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Nicholls State University tennis teams battled Southern Miss on Sunday in Hattiesburg but fell short as the women were defeated, 4-3, and the men dropped their match, 5-2.
The women fell behind 1-0 after USM took courts 1 and 2 in doubles. But
Paulina Villegas evened it up quickly with a 6-0, 7-6 (0) win at No. 2 singles.
Southern Miss inched towards match point with wins at 6 and 1.
Amalie Grube Andersen fell in straight sets before
Sophia Sara Safarova split her first two sets before retiring.
On the top line,
Aada Inna secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory to keep the Colonels alive. Then
Julia Bordiginon fought back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to even the match.
For the final court,
Noemie Piquet forced a third set at No. 4 but would come up short against Sakura Sudo, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6.
On the men's side, Southern Miss breezed through doubles play with 6-0 wins at 1 and 3.
In singles,
Kotaro Matsumura kept his undefeated singles record intact with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 victory at No. 2.
Colin Tavares also picked up a win with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-2 triumph at No. 3.
USM took three of the other four matches in straight sets, including
Maxwell Lindstedt suffering his first loss of the season.
