BATON ROUGE, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team opened up play in the LSU Invitational on Friday with a 10-2 loss to Penn State in six innings before dropping a 7-0 decision to Southern Miss.
Nicholls will continue the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. rematch with Penn State on Saturday and then will take on LSU at 6:30 p.m. The game against the host Tigers will stream on SEC Network+.
Game 1 - Penn State 10, Nicholls 2 (6 inn.)
Nicholls led by a run over Penn State after two innings but the Nittany Lions scored nine unanswered for a 10-2 run-rule victory.
Byrnne Songy had two of the Colonels' five hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the second inning for a 2-1 advantage.
Riley Rutherford had a run-scoring single in the opening frame, plating
Claire Sisco who led the Colonel first off with a double.
But a two-run homer by Penn State's Haylie Brunson off of
Averi Paden in the third sparked a three-run frame. PSU then pieced together a four-run fourth and followed with a single run in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game early.
Nicholls allowed 11 hits with Meagan Ricks going 3-for-4 for Penn State. Paden lasted 2.1 innings with four runs on five hits.
Sierra Ouellette tossed 1.1 innings with four runs as well on two hits and
Madison Fulfer allowed two earned on four hits in 2.1 innings.Â
Game 2 - Southern Miss 7, Nicholls 0
The Colonel offense was limited to three hits by Jana Lee while the defense had three errors that led to four unearned runs in a 7-0 loss to Southern Miss.
Ally Mooneyham,
Carmella Muccilli and
Lilianna Robledo had singles in the setback. Nicholls struck out three times against Lee and did not have any walks.
Molly Yoo took the loss with three earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. She struck out two but hit two and walked three.
The Golden Eagles scored in the first on a sac fly, then an error in the second made way for a pair of run-scoring singles. With the bags full in the fourth, Weeks singled in two runners for a 5-0 advantage.

Molly VandenBout in the sixth, USM added two more unearned runs to make the final.
