BATON ROUGE, La. - A three-run double by
Reagan Heflin fueled a six-run frame while
Molly Yoo tossed all seven innings as the Colonels knocked off Penn State, 6-4, on Saturday at the LSU Invitational at Tiger Park.
Nicholls later played No. 6 LSU and was defeated in five innings, 12-2. The teams were scheduled for a rematch on Sunday but the rest of the tournament has been cancelled due to weather.
In the victory over Penn State, Yoo gave up a solo home run to Meagan Ricks in the third but Nicholls answered immediately with its huge inning.
Brynne Songy and
Kayleigh Lugowski singled to start the inning before
Claire Sisco walked to load the bases.
Ally Mooneyham then found space down the right field line for an RBI single.
With one down, Heflin smacked a double in the left center gap to clear the bases for a 4-1 lead. Then with two down,
Erin Krause tripled for the fifth run and the Colonels added one more on an error.
Penn State tagged Yoo for five hits for a combined three runs in the final two innings but fell short in making the comeback.
Yoo struck out four and walked two, surrendering 11 hits in her complete game effort. Haylie Brunson led PSU with three hits.
Mooneyham was the lone Colonel with two hits as six others finished with one.
In the night cap, Songy belted a two-out, two-run double in the first inning before LSU scored 12 unanswered runs for the run-rule win.
Nicholls had seven hits with Sisco and Heflin each tallying two. LSU's Ashley Vallejo threw all five innings and struck out one.
Averi Paden took the loss, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings. The big blow came in the six-run third when Tori Edwards hit a grand slam for the final runs of the night.
Molly VandenBout, who accounted for one of the Colonels' seven hits, also threw 1.1 innings with one hit allowed.
