OXFORD, Miss. - The Nicholls State University softball team picked up a 10-5 win over Murray State in the opening game of the Ole Miss Classic on Friday before falling 5-0 to the host Rebels.
Nicholls (7-10) will play two more on Saturday, facing South Alabama at 1 p.m. and will have a rematch with Ole Miss at 6 p.m.
Game 1 - Nicholls 10, Murray State 5
The Colonels scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take down Murray State, 10-5, in Friday's opening game.
Nicholls trailed 2-0 after the first inning and 4-2 in the fourth before
Molly VandenBout hit a three-run double in the bottom half for the lead.
Brynne Songy capped the inning with an RBI single.
Laylin Sturm made it 7-4 with a run-scoring single in the fifth, and
Kayleigh Lugowski belted her first career homer with a three-run shot to put the score at 10-4. Murray State added a run in the sixth to make the final.
Molly Yoo picked up the win with five runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. VandenBout tossed two hitless innings in relief.Â
Game 2 - Ole Miss 5, Nicholls 0
The Colonels were held to one hit in a 5-0 loss to Ole Miss.
Ally Mooneyham singled with one out in the first before Aliyah Binford went on to retire 19 straight batters. Leading 5-0 in the seventh with two outs, the streak ended when
Reagan Heflin reached on an error but a groundout would end the game.
VandenBout held Ole Miss to a single run on a sac fly in the second and gave up just four hits through five innings. But the Rebels broke the game open in the sixth with two outs on back-to-back homers by Lexi Brady -- a three-run shot -- and a solo home run by Mackenzie Pickens.
VandenBout struck out two and allowed two free passes.
Sierra Ouellette finished off the sixth inning and walked one.
