Women’s Hoops set to Host Northwestern State & East Texas A&M

THIBODAUX, La. – After earning their fifth consecutive victory last week, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will host Northwestern State (Feb. 6) and East Texas A&M (Feb. 8).

Last week, Nicholls (15-6, 8-4 SLC) extended its winning streak to five with a pair of dominate victories over HCU (76-51) and McNeese (84-67).

During their five-game winning surge the Colonels have been lights out on both ends. In that span the unit has a +14-scoring margin while allowing 56.4 ppg. Additionally, the squad has made 127 field goals with 34 triples while allowing 97 made shots and only 19 from long range while averaging 11.8 steals with +3.5 turnover margin. Due to their stout defensive play the Colonels currently rank 35th and 38th nationally in DFG% (37.1) and scoring defense (56.8).

The Red & Gray offense is a balanced attack is led Tanita Swift who averages 14.7 points and 3.4 assists. Britiya Curtis and Deonna Brister average 9.8 and 9.4 points respectively. Elli Garnett is coming off her best game of the season with 23 points, 10 rebound performance that raised her scoring average to 7.8.

Last week, Northwestern State improved to 10-10, 7-4 SLC after earning victories against UTRGV (73-66) and East Texas A&M (61-50). The Lady Demons are led by a trio of double figure scorers as Maya Blake leads the way with 17 followed by Vernell Atamah (14), and Sharna Ayres (11.1).

East Texas A&M (4-16, 1-10 SLC) is entering the week on an eight-game losing streak and will play McNeese in Lake Charles on Thursday. The Lions feature three double digit scorers as Jordyn Newsome pours in 14.9 ppg followed by Cora Horvath (11.3), and Jasmine Payne (10).

The Colonels are looking to keep their momentum rolling and avenge a pair of losses from earlier this season as they lost to the road matchups with the Lady Demons and Lions. The Red & Gray have won seven of the last eight games following those losses to start the Calander year.

The Colonels were plagued by fourth quarter scoring droughts in both games. In the matchup in Natchitoches, the Colonels offense went cold late, and they allowed NSU to close the game with a 12-0 run. Two days prior in Commerce, Texas the Colonels gave up a 13-0 run to open the final quarter to lose traction and fall late.
