THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University tennis program welcomed league newcomer UTRGV for a Monday doubleheader and came up short in both matches as the men fell 4-0 before the women's team was defeated 6-1.
The men's team (6-7, 0-4 SLC) took a court in doubles play as
Kotaro Matsumura and Colin Taveres won 6-3 at No. 1. But the Vaqueros won 6-1 on the top court before Sam Whitehead and Paolo Bonaguro secured the point for the visitors with a 6-4 victory.
In singles, UTRGV cruised to the team win with three straight-set victories.
Felipe Spagnuolo was a point away from securing a win in set two before play was suspended, while Tavares, whose match was also stopped early, had a battle in his first set but fell 8-6 in the tiebreaker.
For the women's match (2-9, 0-4 SLC), the Colonels won in doubles as well but were able to pick up a singles victory.
Constanza Cruz and
Sophia Sara Safarova secured a 6-3 win at No. 3 before UTRGV won the point with 6-4 wins at courts 1 and 2.
The Vaqueros went up 2-0 with a win at No. 3 singles, then Cruz notched her first league win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6. However, UTRGV clinched the team victory with straight-set wins at 1 and 5.
The final two matches were decided in three sets but both went in favor of the visitors.
Julia Bordiginon was outlasted 1-6, 6-0, 2-6, while
Paulina Villegas dropped her match, 7-6 (3), 0-6, 5-10.Â
