Offense Struggles in Road Series at NSU

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was swept by Northwestern State University over the weekend.
 
After poor weather conditions postponed Friday's contest, Nicholls (11-18, 5-10 SLC) dropped a double header on Saturday before Northwestern State (18-9, 10-5 SLC) completed the sweep on Sunday afternoon.
 
GAME ONE: Nicholls 4, Northwestern State 9
 
After falling behind 1-0, Aaron Biediger who was hit by the opening pitch of the second inning stole second before scoring on a Carter Jenkins base knock to right field to tie the game. Despite two strikeouts by starting pitcher Nuno Parache, the Demons scored two runs on four hits in the home half of the second frame. In the ensuing inning, Karson Irvin and Chase Jans hits consecutive base hits before Irvin scored on a passed ball to put the Colonels within one (2-3).
 
The Demons extended their lead to five before the Colonels scored two runs on three hits in the fifth. After Irvin was picked off at third, Jaden Collura laced a two out double down the right field line to allow Jans to score from first. Collura scored on the next play, as Biediger singled to center field. Following three scoreless stanzas by relief pitcher Luke McGibboney, the Demons scored two runs on four hits eighth before Joseph Bordelon entered the game and got out of a bases loaded situation with a fielder's choice and a pair of strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO: Nicholls 5, Northwestern 9
 
In game two the Demons jumped out to a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth inning before the Colonels tied the game on three hits and five walks.
 
Christian Wescott began the stanza by getting hit by a pitch before, Collura followed two groundouts with his own full count walk. Next, Aaron Biediger and Luke Dickerson laced consecutive run scoring singles to force a Demons' pitching change. After the substitution, Carter Jenkins plated Biediger with a base knock through the right side. Fisher Ingersoll worked a full count walk to load the bases before Narvin Booker Jr. was hit by a pitch to bring Dickerson home. The Demons went to the bullpen once again and walked Wescott for the second time in the inning to tie the game at 5.
 
In the ensuing frame, the Colonels couldn't take advantage with bases loaded and no outs before the Demons scored four runs on five hits and an error across the next two innings. The Red & Gray tallied six hits with Biediger being the only player to record multiple.
 
GAME THREE: Nicholls 2, Northwestern 6

The series finale was a defensive battle that saw both teams tally six hits. After the Demons jumped out to a 6-0 lead, the Colonels comeback effort fell short as they scored two runs in the eighth. Starting pitchers Michael Lindsey and Trent Hillien combined for three scoreless frames before the Demons' scored five runs across the fourth and fifth innings before adding a solo home run in the seventh.
 
The Demons took out Hillien after he allowed a one out single up the middle to Jans. Following a popout, Biediger reached base on an error before advancing to second on a passed ball. Next, Logan Mock and Ingersoll earned consecutive full count walks to put the Colonels on the board. Following another pitching change, Biediger scored on a balk. However, in the ninth, Alex Roux recorded his first hit of the season and Collura was hit by a pitch before they were left stranded.

The Red & Gray will return home to host HCU on April 4-6. Friday and Saturday's action will begin at 6 p.m. respectively, while Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
