THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's tennis team finished up the regular season with setbacks on the road, falling 4-3 to UIW on Saturday before a 5-2 loss to Lamar on Monday.
Nicholls wraps up the regular season with an 8-13 overall record and a 1-8 mark in the Southland. The Colonels will open up Southland Tournament play next week on Tuesday. The Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex will serve as host for the tournament.
At UIW, Nicholls dropped the doubles point and fell behind 3-0 after losses at No. 1 and No. 2 in singles. But
Noemie Piquet earned a 6-4 win in her first set at No. 3, then outlasted Amelie Montalvo in the second, 7-6 (7-5).
The Colonels added another point when
Constanza Cruz fought back from a loss in the first set to win at No. 6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. However, UIW would clinch the match as
Julia Bordiginon came up short in a three-set loss to Smilia Matovic. Nicholls received a three-set win by
Blanca Losada at No. 5 to make the final.
In Monday's match, Nicholls won the doubles point before
Paulina Villegas secured a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2.
Despite winning the doubles point, Nicholls fell on the top court, 6-2. But Cruz and
Sophia Sara Safarova continued their strong play in league action with a 6-4 win at No. 3, finishing at 4-2 for the season. Piquet and Losada secured the point with a 6-4 triumph at No. 2.
Lamar won all five of its singles matches in straight sets. Piquet fell in a tiebreaker in her opening set before falling 6-2 in the second.
