Colonels Take Series Finale 7-6 in Extra Innings Thriller

THIBODAUX, La. – After splitting the first two games of the series, the Nicholls State University baseball team defeated Stephen F. Austin 7-6 in a 13-inning thriller on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels recorded a season high 16 hits including three hits in the final inning. First with one down, Aaron Biediger singled through the left side before Carter Jenkins singled following a pop out. Lastly, Fisher Ingersoll broke the 6-6 tie in the 13th inning with a two out double to secure the Red & Gray victory.
 
After SFA scored four runs in the opening inning, Nicholls (15-25, 8-16 SLC) responded by scoring three runs on three hits in the second. The Colonels got on the board as Jenkins scored on a play that saw Matt Melancon reach via a fielder's choice. Next, Karson Irvin laced a double to plate Melancon before Irvin scored on the next play as Logan Mock hit a single to the outfield.
 
SFA held a one run advantage until the Colonels scored two runs on three hits in the fifth. Jaden Collura and Biediger began the frame with consecutive base hits before scoring on back-to-back plays. Collura scored on a Jenkins sacrifice fly while Biediger scored on an Ingersoll base knock through the right side to put the Red & Gray up 5-4.
 
Following a scoreless sixth frame, SFA tied the game at 5 with base hit in the seventh inning. The teams went scoreless in the next three stanzas until they both scored in the 11th. The Lumberjacks scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch while the Jenkins plated pinch runner Andy Miller with a single.
 
Both teams had multiple chances to win the game in extra innings as they combined to leave eight runners stranded after the ninth inning. Four different pitchers went at least two full innings for the Colonels as the unit totaled 12 strikeouts. Starting pitcher Cole Simoneaux bounced back after the first inning to finish with two strikeouts while allowing six hits and four runs in four full frames of action. Harper Jordan struck out one and allowed one hit in two innings. Cole Poirrier went five full frames as he fanned seven while allowing three hits and two runs. Winning pitcher Nick Fields had two strikeouts and matched Jordan's two frames.
