HAMMOND, La. - The Nicholls State University women's team put together a strong performance on the road and came away with a 5-2 victory at Southeastern on Monday night.
Nicholls (7-11, 1-6 SLC) won the doubles point against SLU (11-6, 3-4 SLC) before winning the first four completed matches in singles. The Lady Lions won the final two to prevent the sweep.
On the top two lines in doubles, the Colonels won both matches, 6-2.
Aada Inna and
Paulina Villegas started it off with a win at No. 1 before
Noemie Piquet and
Blanca Losada clinched the point at No. 2.
Sophia Sara Safarova and
Constanza Cruz had a 5-4 lead at No. 3 when play was suspended.
In singles play, Piquet breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Cruz made it 3-0 Colonels with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6. The victory was the sixth straight for Cruz, who improved to 3-2 in league play.
Losada kept the winning going with a three-set win at No. 5. After being shutout in the opening set, she roared back to win the next two, 6-2, 6-1. The final Colonel point was courtesy of Villegas which also came in three sets, rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
The Lady Lions claimed a straight-set win at No. 1 and won in a tiebreaker at No. 4.
