THIBODAUX, La. – After taking an early lead, the Nicholls State University baseball team fell short to LSU, 5-3 in from of a sellout crowd at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday night.
Following two scoreless frames, Nicholls (12-21, 6-12 SLC) plated three runs on four hits across the third and fourth innings. With two down,
Karson Irvin hit a single and advanced to third on a throwing error.
Chase Jans brought Irvin home with a single through the left side.
In the ensuing stanza,
Narvin Booker Jr. laced a two out single to left field before A.J. Cappell earned a walk. Next,
Fisher Ingersoll extended the Colonels lead with a two run double to right center.
The Colonels led 3-0 until the seventh inning where LSU scored five runs on four hits. After Daniel Dickinson and Josh Pearson earned back-to-back walks the Colonels went to the bullpen for a second time. However, the Tigers hit three consecutive singles to tie the game at 3. Next, Chris Stanfield laced a two-run single to left field to put the Tigers up 5-3.
LSU shut the door on the comeback effort as Nicholls was retired in order in the seventh and eighth innings and left one runner stranded in the ninth.
On the mound, starting pitcher
Dalton Hill and
Luke McGibboney allowed five hits and zero runs across the first five innings.
Joseph Bordelon and
Cole Simoneaux struck out four batters while allowing two hits and two runs.
Cole Poirrier picked up his first loss of the season as he allowed four hits and three runs.
