THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team needed just five innings to extend its winning streak to 12 games as the Colonels picked up a sweep of HCU with a 10-0 run-rule victory on Wednesday afternoon at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.
With the win, Nicholls improved to 22-20 overall and 12-6 in the Southland. The 12-game winning streak is the longest from the program since the 2016 squad reeled off 13 in a row.Â
Molly Yoo tossed her second shutout in as many days, limiting HCU to just two hits which both came in the first inning. She then retired nine batters in a row and allowed just a two-out walk in the fourth for the rest of the game. Yoo struck out five as she improved to 9-7 on the year.
The offense produced nine hits and took advantage of three HCU errors and four walks.
Erin Krause and
Lilianna Robledo had two hits and two RBIs each, while
Claire Sisco,
Reagan Heflin and
Laylin Sturm also had two RBIs.
HCU's lone threat came in the first inning but Yoo notched two strikeouts to keep the Huskies off the board. Then in the second, Nicholls used five hits to grab a 3-0 lead. Sturm singled up the middle for two runs before Sisco doubled her in for the early advantage.
In the third, two errors by HCU to start the frame opened the floodgates for a seven-run inning. Robledo sprayed a single down the line for two RBIs, then Sisco was the third consecutive Colonel to draw a walk and it brought home another run. Krause snuck one past the first baseman of a two-run double and Heflin capped the inning with a two-run single to left.
Nicholls went on to secure its fourth run-rule victory in the winning streak.
